Every year, Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, invites applications for National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) and admission to 5 – year M.Sc(Integrated) Programme at NISER, Bhubaneswar and UM-DAECBS, Mumbai.

Aim: The aim of these special institutes is to nurture world class scientists, who will take up challenging research and teaching assignments in Universities, R&D Institutions and Industry.


National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar
NISER has been set up by the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India to impart high quality science education in a vibrant academic ambiance, with a faculty of distinguished teachers and scientists. NISER offers a 5 – year integrated M.Sc. Programme in basic science after 10 +2 (or equivalent) schooling.The institute has four major schools – in mathematical, physical, chemical and biological science. At present, NISER functions from the beautiful campus of the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, a renowned institute with state-of-the-art infrastructure that includes an excellent library, a large compute center and several research laboratories. Degrees at NISER will be awarded by the HomiBhabha National Institute (HBNI), a Deemed-to-be- University within the Department of Atomic Energy. There will be 60 seats with reservation for SC/ST candidates and persons with disability (PD) as per government of Indian norms.

UM-DAE Centre of ExcellenceBasic Science, Mumbai
The Department of Atomic Energy,/Government of India and University of Mumbai, have set up in a Mumbai a new autonomous Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences, which offers a 5-year M.Sc (Integrated) programme in the basic science. UM-DAE CBS, MUMBAI is to be an international class centre for high-quality teaching embedded in a vibrant postgraduate and research environment, with some of the best teachers and scientist from major institutes in the city (TIFR< BARC< IIT Bombay) and the University of its faculty. The Centre is located in the Kailina campus of University of Mumbai. Degrees at UM-DAE CBS will be awarded by the 150-year-old University of Mumbai.
Tentatively there will be 35 seats (in Physics and Science streams only) with reservations as per Government norms, including reservation for persons with disability (PD).

Scheme of exam & value of Awards

Scheme of examination:
It will have a balanced semester-based course structure with a flexible seamless curriculum that emphasizes interdisciplinary nature of Science in the 21st century and promotes exploration, innovation and research. The curriculum for the first two semesters will be common to all and specialization will begin with the 3rd semester.

Value of Award:
  • The students admitted to NISER will receive a scholarship of Rs.5,000/-p.m. Students will also receive a Contingency grant of Rs.20,000 /- annually to facilitate their academic pursuits
  • A grant for books, where applicable
  • Students are provided with a suitable residential accommodation facility in the campus along with sports and cultural facilities


Eligibility for admission to NISER:
  • Qualification: General category: 60%; SC/ST category: 55%; PD category: 55% in aggregate (or equivalent grade) in Class XII (or equivalent) examination from any recognized Board in India.
  • Age limit: Max. 25 years relaxation for SC/ST candidates. National Entrance Screening test (NEST) is conduct at a number of centers in India.
Seats : 60 seats in the first year.
Reservation: 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST categories.

Exam pattern

The test consists of five sections:
  • General (compulsory)
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry and (5) Biology
Of section (2-5), which will carry equal weight-age of marks, any three will have to be selected. The questions will be of objective type designed to test comprehension and analytical abilities of a candidate. Appearing in NEST is compulsory for all those seeking admission to NISER and/ or UM-DAECBS. Candidates short – listed on the basic of their performance in NEST are called for interviews that will be held on different dates, in Bhubaneswar and Mumbai. The combined NEST and the interview scores will determine the final selection.

Admission Benefit:
There is a scope of NEST exemption for the students of Kishore Vaigyanik Protshan Yojana (KVPT) Fellows or who have qualified India National Olympiad Examinations organized by HBCSE (TIFR) in different subjects, provided they satisfy the eligible criteria for admission and send their applications along with application fee at the same address (given below).
